What a generous and lovely person! Cheryl, of Knitpulsive
was kind enough to send me a final gift. As you can see, "the Ultimate Knitted Tee" book, some stitch markers, some sock yarn (yay!) and some kid mohair. I am getting ready to start "Clapotis" so I will be needing the stitch markers. WOW! This was such a surprise. Isn't it always neat to get a package when you weren't expecting one? I'm not worthy!
Oh, I should get a pic of the yarn for Clapotis.
Again...THANK YOU CHERYL!!!

Something happened to me today and I finished about 4 little projects I had stuffed away. Will try to post pics later. 1st was the little Bethany Booties on the Berocco website. 2nd was a little hat from Last minute Knitted Gifts. 3rd was a Rowan Poncho, and 4th was an Aura Cap from Calmer that I never sewed together. I hope to keep this up! I have a BUNCH of stuff that is languishing in the depths of my knitting bag(s).

I am excited about Stitches West! My friend Joanne and I will be heading up on Friday morning, hittin' the Market, attending a couple of classes on Sat., then heading home. I have no idea what to expect, never done anything like this.

Oh, hit the big 4-3 on the 18th. Got lots of pink stuff. Pink iPod, pink KitchenAid blender, pink KitchenAid coffee grinder. I already had this in pink, so the family just took it from there. My kitchen is sort of 50's retro, with pinks and greens. Plus, KitchenAid donates to breast cancer research on these pink appliances, COOL! I think I need to order those pink spatulas and cutting board....... for the cause of course.

Well, my knitting guru Joanne and I decided that we wanted to hit several Southern California knitting establishments. The husbands were there to drive, find parking spots, and provide cash. Lots of cash.

Our first stop was in Thousand Oaks. Eva's Needleworks didn't open until 11:00 a.m., so we kept driving to find a pit stop. Drove right past what we thought was another yarn store, Knit Port. Joanne and I both yelled it out at the same time, "YARN STORE!" After our pit stop we checked out Knit Port. The lady was really nice. Miko? She introduced herself but I can't be for sure that was her name. Neat and clean little store. Small-ish selection of yarn and many knitted things to purchase. Yummy, fuzzy Aiko cashmere! Didn't buy anything.
Drove down the street to Eva's. Nice selection of yarn and patterns. Ended up buying Rebecca #28 in English. Joanne ended up helping a lady bind off her first scarf. The lady was crying when she left the store. Guess she had come to the store to get help. She wanted to show her mother that she had made her first scarf. Well, the lady behind the counter made her feel like she was an idiot and kind of brushed her aside. So Joanne stepped in to help her. The store was busy, and there was only one person working, so I can't totally bad-mouth the store. We were glad that we happened to be there at the right time to help this new knitter!

Our next stop was HERE. VERY BUSY STORE! And with the massive amounts of yarn, everywhere, there is not a lot of maneuvering room. But the owner, was very helpful. Even to help Joanne find another skein of Kureyon in the color she wanted. Did I tell you she was busy? Bonus points for this store! I ended up buying 8 skeins of Kureyon in discontinued colors. For Booga Bags, of course.

Santa Monica was the next stop. This store was my favorite. We couldn't stay long and I definitely want to go back. I loved the funkiness of it! And really helpful people. They were super busy too. I didn't buy anything. I was looking at a pair of fingerless...half-fingered...(what are they if they have a portion of the fingers?) gloves. They were made with orange cashmere and were similar to these, except with "finger-ettes"(??). Joanne was about to go into a diabetic shock, due to lack of food, so we had to go.

We checked into our hotel and took it easy the rest of the evening. **

The next day we were up early for pancakes here. During the summer, they have the best peach or strawberry pancakes, EVER! DO ask for extra whipping cream when ordering!
I had the blueberry pancakes since the others are out of season.

Onward! To the Alamitos Bay Yarn Company! We had been here once before, but we came back since it was such a nice store. Busy too! My husband bought my Christmas presents here. (OK, I bought them for him to give to me.) There was a special on some discontinued Classic Elite Dali Cashmere. Normally, $64, now, $44, and a free lace scarf pattern with purchase. Also, a huge hank of Lorna's Laces, Helen's Lace, with free shawl pattern on label. Oh, Color #76, Aslan. Can you say, PRETTY COLORS? (Forgot, the cashmere Dali yarn was in Chocolate.)

I was actually getting tired of yarn shopping after this. Of course I could go again tomorrow, if asked!

It was nice to get away, even for such a short trip. Our husband's are so patient to put up with this obsession.

**this was the nicest Doubletree. Instead of the hideous bedspreads, that they don't clean every time, and may have all kinds of other people's bodily fluids embedded into them, there was a down comforter in what I first thought was a duvet. Turns out, it was two huge super soft king sized sheets, enveloping the comforter. Everything was white and clean, about 6 fluffy pillows and a smaller pillow embroidered with "sweet dreams." It was lovely! The best hotel bed ever!
We miss my Dad terribly, and truthfully, I never thought it would be this difficult. That sounds kind of cold, but I thought I was tougher than this. Guess not.

After posting a picture of my SKP3's latest gift, I realized I never put a description of all the goodies. What a generous soul she is! 2 skeins of Wool-Ease in Green Heather, 1 skein of Fantasy Naturale in a yummy orange-y color, 3 books, "Life Makeovers" by Cheryl Richardson, "A Garden Stroll" by Lori Ihnen, and "No-Sweat Flannel Quilts" by Beth Garretson, a sachet bag, some candles and a candle holder and potpourri! YOWZA! I was totally floored!
Thanks!

My friend and I just signed up for Stitches West. It will be good to get away. Too bad it's not this month! I have never done anything like this, so it will be an adventure. I hope I get the classes I picked.

Words can't express the sorrow I am feeling. We prayed that The Lord would do what was right, His Will, so he would not suffer, and I have to believe that is what happened. My brother, the RN, agreed that the chemotherapy/radiation would have been a very painful process for this type of cancer. I am thankful in that respect, but I am missing him terribly.

What a lovely treat from my SKPIII. Your gifts totally brightened my day. I will post a picture ASAP.

Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16288804978757901524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6805902.post-1098745606232596722004-10-25T15:46:00.000-07:002004-10-25T16:06:46.233-07:00Cancer sucks.

Our lives have been turned upside down by this horrible disease. My Dad, who has lived with us for over 9 years, has been diagnosed with colon, and possibly liver cancer. He went in for a colonoscopy last Tuesday and they found a large mass blocking the lower intestine. They scrambled to get an appointment for the surgeon the next day. In the meantime, he came home and due to the anesthesia and not eating, he blacked out, fell, and broke his ankle. He was in such serious pain he did not want to go to the doctor the next day. Amazingly enough, I was able to get him out the door by pulling the car right up to him and helping him. They did surgery on Friday and saw some nasty things on his liver that they took a biopsy on.

He is still in ICU. They put a cast on his foot. They think he will have to endure Chemo. They think he won't have long to live.

I believe that The LORD may have another plan.

As much as I have complained about my Dad over the years, the messes he makes, the showers he never takes enough of, the smoking he can't get enough of, the weight he won't lose....

It doesn't matter.

All I want is my Dad back, in his little room, puttering around making messes in the kitchen that he never cleans up, peeing all over the bathroom because he has no aim, it doesn't matter.

Just come home Dad, we miss and love you.

I am making this little Fiber Trends "Easy Lace Poncho" with Cotton Fleece, and right in the middle of a row there was a nasty 'ol knot. I get soooo ticked off about these things. Anyway, I decided that I would re-wind everything from now on! It really ticks me off when it is a more expensive yarn and you find it tied together in the middle of the skein. What is up with that? There oughta be a law! I ended up buying the Knit Stitch and the Purl Stitch books by Sally Melville. Too bad you don't become a better knitter by the amount of books you own. I would BE Sally Melville by now!

This was such a thoughtful and timely gift! The Lavish Lace book is great! I am SO loving lace stuff lately. I know this book will help me out LOTS! And the quilting book, Pillow Party, is wonderful! The little mesh bag for felting stuff in the wash is a neat idea. I never thought about using one for felting. The yarn is yummy, the candles smell lovely and the chocolates lasted about two minutes! Thanks SO MUCH Secret pal!

I finally bit the dust and bought one, as you can see. My somewhat LYS has a card that gets stamped whenever you make a purchase. Once you spend $200 you get a $20 credit towards yarn, or whatever. I chose to use mine for this.
On the knitting front, I am still trudging along on Loll. It takes me a good hour to get the "skin tag" row complete. I am probably slower than most though. I am also struggling on Carla. I did not join the Carla along, but should have. Like many, I am having a problem with the armhole decreases. I have ripped out more times than I can count. I have used different yarn and practiced different ways, still no luck. So, I have asked my Guru to try and figure it out for me. I SO wish that there was a knitting group closer to me so I could interact with knitters. There is a group locally, but most are very old and I think their style of knitting is afghans and such. I think they would be just as puzzled by Rowan designs.
voodoo My daughter took her State Board for Cosmetology, so we were in the area. (She passed her written but failed the practical by 15 points. Bummer.) I love this yarn. It is the softest and most beautiful handpainted yarn I have ever seen. I could only afford one skein, but there are 190 yds, enough for a nice scarf. Anyway, two thumbs up for the Knit Cafe! Nice shop owner, nice store!

The fringe took a good 2 hours to apply. I like it! I did end up using almost every bit of 6 balls. The fringe took almost a full ball, and then some. Now to work on Loll. Although, I keep looking at the Carla-along and drooling. I have some Cotton Tape in my stash that I was going to use for Bella, but I could easily change my mind about that. I should just work on Loll. Man, those dingle -berry- skin-tags just kill my wrist after one row. Probably why I am not thrilled about getting back to it.

Maybe it would help to read the manual....This is Oakley from Berroco #225, in Suede. I am about 3/4 of the way through it, I think. Adding the fringe might take quite a while, maybe more time than it took to knit the shawl. I am only on the end of my 3rd ball of Suede and the pattern calls for 6. Seems strange that it will take 3 more balls. (And no, I didn't swatch!) To me, this is totally something that does not require swatching. Unless you are normally super loose, or tight. I am neither ;-0! Aly wanted to be included in the morning post. She has not been feeling well and we don't know what's wrong. She perked up a bit last night, so maybe she is on the road to recovery. Her big ol' fuffy tail has been hanging limp and we think maybe she bruised it or something. It's always a real wagger, but lately it seems to be bothering her. If things don't improve soon, we will have to get her to the vet. Back to knitting. I have not progressed any further on Loll, AKA the skin tag sweater. There are two different socks languishing in the bottom of my knitting bag too. Socks bug me. My Guru says that I need to complete them though. Maybe I should knit a fatter sock like Carrie.

That's a little warm-ish if you ask me. It is a little overcast, but no rain yet. I am actually doing a little swatch for the Rowan Denim Bomber. I never swatch. I am a naughty knitter! Everything always seems to turn out OK. My guru says that it will not happen someday and I will be sorry for not swatching. Whatever. I love reading the hasenpfeffer's blog, she IS the picture perfect knitter. She swatches and everything! And what a great attitude. I aspire to knit like that!

I started a new project. I am so weak! I was at the LYS (which is not so L) and fell for this. I am using the "Wild Bill Hickcock" color, which is darker brown. Pretty cool stuff to knit with! I also received my new book, and enough yarn to make this, for my daughter. I am using "Memphis" as the color. I am a sick, sick knitter. I did finish the blue Aura...... does that justify my purchases? (NOT!) I am still plugging away on the Calmer Loll sweater, AKA the skin tag sweater. Those little boogers are time consuming and I really have to concentrate when I am knitting each row. Yes, I'm a slooooow knitter. OOOH, have to watch the 48 Hours Mystery. It's a repeat, but it involves the murder of our local Assistant D.A. by a former cop. Oops, I gave away the mystery, but it's a good, watch it! (10:00 p.m. Pacific)

I think If I steam it a tad it might help. It's a little wonky on the bottom. I did the neck trim as shown and it helped pull in the neckline, but when I did the same for the bottom it pulled it in way too much and looked pretty "billowy-ish." Maybe I was knitting it too tightly....Oh well, for now there is no bottom edge. I would love to crochet the Malibu poncho. There is one problem though, I don't crochet. I used to crochet. As I recall, some pretty ugly watermelon pot holders. I only did it from memory though, no pattern. Anyway, I am waiting by the mailbox for my new Rowan Mag. to arrive. I was needing a fix so badly that I bought three back issues on Saturday. LOVE (drool, slurp) looking through them!

Yes, you see some ends that need to be woven in! Like the head? It's my hippy-chic head I found in a thrift store last year. My friend, Lori, ended up with one like it, in blue colors. Probably came from the same old person, but we got them on different days. Cool thing about living amongst the elderly, they get tired of the cool old stuff and it ends up in local thrift stores. Off to finish the blue Aura!

The beginnings of the back of Loll is shown in the beige-y tan color. The little hang-y down things on Loll remind me of skin tags...kinda gross. Plus, they take forever to knit. I was almost finished with the same tan colored Aura, and messed up the decreases TWICE! Oh well, you learn something new all the time. I wasn't decreasing IN PATTERN, although it doesn't say to, you are just supposed to know. Remember, it's an EASY Rowan pattern, so an idiot could do it, RIGHT? Well, not this idiot! My guru Joanne got me fixed up and on the right track. I started the blue one during the decreasing crisis. I love doing the lacey pattern! I have learned something disturbing about myself...I am a short- attention -span -knitter. As I have mentioned before, I buy yarn for many (MANY!) projects, start them, start something else, get bored, try to finish the something else I started, and on and on and on. I think I need to be on some ADD meds.

The weather pixie says 99 degrees, but that is so wrong. It is like 104! Our house has an evaporative cooler, and at 104 it is quite useless. Oh I forgot, it's a DRY heat. That makes it so much better. Aside from the heat, this has been the most perfect day to knit. But have I yet? No. Want to know why? My wrists are killin' me! I slapped a couple of those Salonpas pain relieving patches on both of my wrists this morning. Looked like a suicide attempt victim. Did it help, you ask? Not really. It actually made the pain a little worse. When ye olde CTS flares up, the only thing that seems to help me is a big fat Darvocet. I'm pretty wimpy, so one pill works for days on me. I had surgery on my right wrist in January, 2000. Didn't help, and now the left wrist is just as bad. So you just learn to deal with the pain. Pills, patches, hot wax, whatever it takes. Today is my daughter's 19th birthday. We had cake and stuff last night for her. Tonight she is going out with her friends to a fancy restaurant. Home Town Buffet I think she called it. Not really. She doesn't know where they are taking her. After school she was supposed to get dressed up and be ready for wherever it is they are taking her. I can't believe she is 19! Time sure does fly. Oh, back to the perfect knitting-but-not-knitting-day...My husband is gone for 2 days on a camping trip, that's why I should be knitting non-stop. Maybe this evening. Hmmm, what's on TV?
Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16288804978757901524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6805902.post-1090295571139942152004-07-19T20:31:00.000-07:002004-07-19T20:52:51.140-07:00I am such a psycho- knitter. I see so many projects that I love, I start them, I see another, I start that one, and the list goes on! It's a crazy vicious cycle. And I keep acquiring yarn! OOOOH soft....must have! I bought one of those tiny skeins of Lorna's Laces Angel, in sherbet. Oh.My.Goodness. Like heaven in the palm of your hand. I am keeping it to use like a stress ball. I didn't have anything in mind to knit with it when I bought it. Just wanted it to hold. I bought my first Rowan Calmer book, and some yarn too. I bought enough yarn to make Aura, and Loll. Then I ordered some more from gotYarn.com , on sale, to make Cloud or Air. I am using Calm 461 for Aura and Loll, and ordered Drift 460 for the Cloud or Air. I have never done a lace pattern, and I am lovin' this one for Aura. I don't know any better, but it is very satisfying, this lacey stuff. I have a bunch of yarn to make some more felted bags. Good Christmas gifts I think. Better start now! Oh, and I bought a felted bag from Rachelle at http://www.guardianforgillian.com/ She is making the cutest bags that Amy designed. It is for a great cause! And she was so quick to ship. I gave the bag to my daughter and she was delighted. These bags would make great gifts, and you would be helping little Gillian too! So just DO IT!

I think Bonne Marie is a genius! (this is my first reference link to somebody so important. Hope I did it right!) I wish that all knit pattern instructions were as complete and helpful to beginners. I love this yarn. It is soft and spongy and knits beautifully. I made the medium size, but continued to a longer "body" to cover more of the cranium. I have looked at quite a few completed BUP and did not like how they "stopped short", or so I thought. I think I am definitely going to order the Chickami next!
